A little about the night from the editors of The Painted Lady:

In North America, and in other parts of the world, the Blues underpin or inform pretty much all newer musical forms that followed.

The Blues are a product of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, and their core power ultimately starts at a place of deep hurt.

Their particular call and answer song developed from mostly West Africans who were brought as slaves to toil in the colonial plantation fields, and in the mines of the Americas. Over time, the plight of these people evolved, as did the Blues, and what began naturally as a way of expression, certainly as a way of coping with extreme hardship and systematic demoralisation, can now be viewed as some of the first sparks of the emancipation to come.

As time passed, the call and answer cries of the cotton fields had become the cocksure mythologizing of the gun-toting, knife-wielding, original stone-cold killers, and badass mofos that peopled the storied legends made famous in juke joints through the decades of the 20th century. In the midst of these two points in Blues evolution, at the Delta crossroads, Satan vied for the souls of the sons who's ambitions and plight at the time could only be helped by an otherworldy power - be that the Devil, or God.

 The Blues are about passion after all, about the insistence of the inherent worth of each human being, about the blood and guts struggles of the down-trodden, about love and pride, about anger and injustice, about getting drunk and fighting, about hunting someone down and pulling the trigger. And certainly, there are as many Blues songs about sex, as there are about revenge.

And yet, let us not forget that so much of the Blues developed in Christian churches throughout the South Eastern States, and in churches in other parts of the USA. The phrasing of charismatic preachers, and their dramatic and compelling sermons, gave voice to congregations that outside the Church, had no voice. And those once voiceless, in turn, slowly started to shift things on the outside, for inside, their own minds and hearts had been changed. Powerful, soul-stirring Gospel Choirs, famous singers, legendary guitarists, reknown Blues artists, all of them were influenced and uplifted by what took place in the Church. And still others made that musical speech, and the Spirit that informed it, an integrally powerful vehicle for a visionary political message that ushered in revolutionary positive and enlightened humanitarian change.  And that phrasing, that poetic emphasis, that impassioned and compelling, Spirit-infused, song-like speak is found everywhere - all over - the Blues.

Sacred and profane, mercurial and flamboyant, when heard, no other music can cut quite as deeply into the hearts of men, nor charge their hearts with the lightning-like energy the Blues rip with. They can be melodied sweetly, warm and spicy, mellow and velvet-textured like good Bourbon, or they can be downright dark and stormy like a heavy, damp, down-pouring Southern rain crackling with lightning and rolling deeply with thunder. They`ll seize and transport you, and then gently rock you into a trance... Then, turn you around, and rip you to pieces all over again.
